I’m looking for recommendations for a set of A/T tires that’ll be competent in winter conditions. The vehicle they’ll go on does “road trip” duty that sees occasional snow. Any off-roading will probably be limited to gravel/dirt and snowy trails, no aggressive rock crawling. Basically, “handle any terrain that’s relatively flat.”
The Falken tires I found above seem to fit the bill, but I’m wondering if there are other A/T tradeoffs and drawbacks like road noise or tire wear in the summer that I might be missing.
What A/T tires would you recommend for light-duty offroad/snow conditions?

I’ve had good luck with Cooper Discovery AT3 and Hankook Dynapro’s AT tires otherwise any AT tire with a snow flake symbol should do fine. You will probably want to stay away from tires that have large smooth tread blocks, those usually suck on ice.

I’ve been happy with these, long lifespan, but I must warn you I don’t have enough experience to compare them with anything else.
Approaching 5 years/90k miles on mine. Probably should replace them this winter but I think I can make them last another year.

I have the AT3w and I love them, and I am thinking about this exact tire for the GX. The AT3W are just a little more aggressive than I want for that vehicle. That being said, the AT3W is very quiet and smooth and its massive tread depth has meant great life so far.

I’ve been running these year round on my van for almost a decade. Hands down the best AT I’ve ever owned.
They are quiet on the highway, they ride decent, they offer predictable handling regardless of conditions, they wear very well.
I’ve had Cooper AT3s, BFGs, Dynapros and IMO none of them hold a candle to the Grabber ATX.

ATs on snowy trails are no fun when you need to brake, any kind of grade and you can just slide until you hit something or it gets all the way flat. They are ok on lightly snowy roads but this could really vary based on where you live Utah snow is plentiful for months and separate snow tires make way more sense than someone in socal who goes to Mammoth once a year.

BFG KO2 simply because they are beautiful

Nokian Rockproof.
Or Nokian Wrg4 for a less aggressive tire that is suited for snow.

Depends on the AT. The ones he listed as well as mine are mountain snowflake rated and they’ve been amazing here.

Sometimes I forget that Mickey Thompson is still a thing. I don’t even know anything about their current lineup so its not a dig at their performance, just that I almost forget they exist.

Well you and I will continue to match on the next set. I have Hankook ATM’s right now on the GX , and will probably flip over to Falken AT3W’s next. If I ever start driving again like I used to, right now I’d be scheduled to replace them in 2065 or so at the rate I’m driving.

I’m pretty happy with the set of AT3Ws on my Dodge . They are quite heavy, but that’s due to mine being E rated truck tires. But, I like them enough that I’m planning on getting another set for my Touareg.

I can’t WAIT to get rid of the AT-M’s on the GX. Hard as rocks, loud as hell. I am just holding out for the summer then I will drop them for AT3w probably.

When I bought the Jeep it had very tired Mickey Thompson mud terrains, and after digging around a bit it seemed evident the brand was well-respected enough to stick with it, but as I said I can’t intelligently compare them to anything else, since that’s all I’ve ever used.

General Grabber AT2
not too noisy, last long and some sizes even have the snow flake on them. And not too expensive.
I had some on my SX4 and loved them.

General Grabber AT2 on my WJ. They’ve been a great, quiet, and well ro unded A/T tire.

Oh I’ve actually been happy with mine. They’ve done everything I’ve asked and more without being overly loud.
What pressure do you keep yours at?

Also are you using P or LT?

I bought the garbage level “Ironman” chineseum ones from TireBuyer last time. They were the cheapest available option in my size. Seem fine, slightly loud er than the Coopers they replaced. W earing at about the same rate. Can’t tell a difference in traction or handling.

I honestly can’t remember, but I keep them at factory pressures. I think mine were old stock as they are cracking on the sidewalls already and the sound and ride like freaking mud terrains.

I vote Mattrax

I absolutely LOVE the Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo2 tires on my truck. They are every bit as quiet and compliant as other highway tires that I’ve had on it, and much better in mud/snow . They are by far the best all season tires I have even had. Good enough to make me consider not replacing my snow tires and just running them year round. I believe Bridgestone has moved to the Revo3, but I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another set of those.

Old stock makes sense. I usually run factory pressures plus 4 or so, because the GX is so heavy. My wear looks even with that.

I’ve been happy with the General Grabber AT2s on my 4Runner (I t hink they’re on a new number by now but the same model of tire), they are excellent off-road and I’ve been pleased with them in the couple winters I’ve had them. They’re not as good as actual snow tires in snow and ice but they’re good enough.

I have General Grabber ATx on my truck, and I love them so far. I haven’t had them very long at all, but they’re quiet enough to not be noticeable on the highway. Apparently great in rain and snow as well, but I haven’t got to test that yet. I have friends with Falken Wildpeak AT3W on their Jeep and they love them as well. They’ve been their main tire for a while but soon they’ll be getting mud terrains for the summer and keeping the Falkens for the winter. No complaints about road noise from them either, and I hear good things about treadwear about both tires

I got these Yokohama Geolander’s GO15
They were compared against BF’s mighty KO2 and had the best manners on the road. And still held its own on winter conditions They are mud and snow rated and much quieter than the all season M ichelins i had before.
I have only had them on for a year but would buy them again in a heart beat. Plus the look isn’t hard core offroad like the KO2s. I’m not into as much offroading yet, ( 2020 was the year but you know) but would like to give them a true shot offroad

I took the KM3 mud tires off my Tacoma and put on some AT3 Falken Wildpeaks. they’re fantastic. Quiet on the highway, and decent offroad.

I’m running the Fallen Rubitreks on the Pajero, which is the very slightly more aggressive cousin to the Wildpeak, and I like them a lot. I haven’t found anything they don’t do well enough. I like them a lot better than the Goodyear Wrangler Kevlars we have on the trucks at work. Those have proven capable enough off road to do everything we need, but they’re not very cut and chip resistant. The picture below is from my work F-150 with 12,000 (mostly off-road, say 75ish % ) miles on it.
The BFG KO2 has long been the gold standard in the class, but you pay for them. I’ve run the first gen Hankook AT-M in the past and really liked them. Not amazing off-road, but good enough, long lasting and downright impressive on packed snow and ice. Back in the day they were cheap, and that made them a good tire overall and fantastic at the price. They tend not to be cheap anymore, and I’m not sure I’d buy them these days over sometime the Falkens you’re interested in.

I need new tires on the Tundra, and was going to grab some AT3W’s, but checked 4 wheel parts on a whim. T hey’re doing $100 off and free mount/balance on a set of Mickey Thompson “Deegan 38's”. Figure it can’t hurt to try out with those sort of discounts, and they’re in stock at my local warehouse.

We live in the snowy woods. Ko2s are the way to go for me. Any snowflake tire should be pretty decent though.

I haven’t been off-road or dealt with snow but I recently had some Falken Wildpeak’s installed on my truck and haven’t had any issues so far. I expected more road noise going to an A/T tire than the previous tires but I haven’t noticed any. They look good too. Added a little machismo to my 2001 Ram compared to the previous owner’s basic highway tires.

38s?!. Ah it's the model name
![]() 08/05/2020 at 17:33 |

Yeah, that’d be a bit much. Sticking with 265/70/17. Was gonna go with 33’s, but thought it would looked too bunched up on the Tundra.

I guess I’ll have to check those out, the GX has the exact same tire size.

What are they going onto? They lack the “LT” designation, so you’ll be load and vehicle limited for the applications if they are going onto an SUV of any sort.
![]() 08/05/2020 at 19:09 |
|
The vehicle is pretty light for an SUV (<3400 lbs), would the 100V load rating be sufficient for that? Not planning to tow anything.
![]() 08/05/2020 at 19:16 |
|
No, for a passenger vehicles— not an issue.
Some of the posters were talking about Tundras and SUVs, but didn’t mention the LT designation, so I just wanted to make sure whether these were going on something heavy.

Thanks for checking in on that for sure; “just in case” clarifications have saved me from many headaches in the past. Oppo is great that way.
These Falkens look like they might be the ones to have.
![]() 08/05/2020 at 20:59 |
|
Yeah, I’ve never gone wrong with Falkens.
I got yelled at (in a good way) by a tire tech once when I ordered in some great-priced tires for my Land Cruiser... they were the right size, but not LT designated.
“I can’t sell you those to go on a Land Cruiser...”
![]() 08/05/2020 at 22:08 |

Any AT tires you will hear an increase in road noise. Particularly because many vehicles come stock with the most fuel efficient quiet tires they can put on them.

I’m a fan of th e Falken wildpeaks, had them on my son’ s Ranger. Quiet and competent on the highway, in the rain and in the dirt. Only had one serious snowfall and with a 1/4 load of bricks in the bed they handled fine. I did go the oversize width and LT designation for truck reasons

I personally am running my Wrangler on a set of Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT’s. They are amazing tires. The best wet road traction I’ve ever had and these are also 3 Peak rated. They’re also the quietest tire I’ve had. You can go with just the AT3 but the XLT variant is a little more rugged. Has a 60k mile tread life.
